First Sofia Medieval fair

First Sofia Medieval fair

In Sofia, on June 5 and June 6, 2014 took place the first Sofia Medieval fair. The event generated great visitor and media interest. It was organized by MODVS VIVENDI – Medieval society in Bulgaria, with the active collaboration of the National History Museum and its branch – the Boyana Church Museum on the territory of which the fair was held.

The Medieval fair is organized in a similar manner to other such events across many European capitals and cities. Its aim was to give a successful start of a new cultural tradition and to resurrect the medieval history and culture.

In an attractive way were recreated details of the everyday life, crafts, arts, military techniques and cultural artifacts from the period of XII to XIV century from the region of Bulgaria, Byzantium, the Latin West and the East.

An outdoor museum with various exhibitions, demonstrations, presentations, seminars, shows, concerts with old music and a medieval bazaar introduced visitors to the world of medieval Bulgarians and their neighbors, allies and enemies from the East and the West.

This has been a unique touch to the color, taste and smell of the Middle Ages through an interactive meeting with the “living history.”

All visitors enjoyed the battle reenactments, had the opportunity to shoot with a bow and arrow, listen to medieval singing and music, taste food prepared following medieval recipes, and watch how various clothes and tools were made. And the youngest visitors had the opportunity to turn into knights and princesses.

The next edition of the fair, presenting an even richer and more interesting program, will be on September 21 and September 22.
